The cost of living in Punta Cana
In this article, I’m going to explain the cost of living in Punta Cana. It’s important to note that Punta Cana has areas with different economic profiles. In this video, I’ll break down the cost of living for a middle-class couple with one child aged 3 to 10 years. We know that information is key when considering a lifestyle change, and these details will be invaluable for your analysis.
1- Housing, Buying or Renting
Considering the cost of buying a 2-bedroom apartment or condo for $250,000, maintenance would be around $150 to $200 per month. If you choose to rent, expect to pay $1,000 to $1,500 monthly, including maintenance. Electricity and internet costs are separate. Home insurance would be around $1,200 annually, although it’s not mandatory in the Dominican Republic.
2- National or International Health Insurance
If you have international health insurance, you may not need coverage here, but ensure it covers all medical situations. If you need local coverage, expect around $2,200 annually for a family plan.
3- Schooling
Punta Cana offers a variety of schools from preschool to high school, mostly bilingual with different teaching approaches. Costs range from $3,000 to $15,000 annually for private schools.
4- Food
Monthly supermarket expenses vary based on dietary preferences, ranging from $700 to $1,000 for basic groceries, excluding wine and other items.
5- Vehicle and Insurance Costs
Vehicle prices are higher in the Dominican Republic due to imports. For instance, a new Hyundai Santa Fe costs around $43,000, with annual insurance around $900 for full coverage.
6- Electricity
Monthly electricity bills for a 2-bedroom apartment range from $150 to $250, slightly higher in the summer due to increased air conditioning usage.
7- Cell Phone and Internet
Expect a monthly bill of $100 to $200 or more for cell phone and internet services, depending on the data plan.
Hope this information helps as you plan your next trip to live or explore Punta Cana.
